The Solar System: A Before Exam Review

Solar System/ Constituents of solar system

In this topic, I will share complete details of solar system, (that will be easy to learn) and its formation and the constituents of solar system.

A brief roadmap:

  • Universe> galaxies> solar system> planets, other astronomical bodies

  • Universe: there is only one universe that is vast beyond human imagination.

  • Galaxies: there are thousands of galaxies in the vast universe but only two galaxies are found by scientist.

  1. Milky way: the spiral shaped galaxy that houses our solar system, named on the basis of its appearance.
  2. Andromeda: the nearest and only galaxy to milky way, still found by scientist
  • Solar systems: in the vast universe and countless galxies there are also many solar system, but the familiar to the life on earth is the solar system of milky way.

  • stars: there are countless number of stars (100 to 400 billion stars discovered) and many more undiscovered> sun is also a star.

  • planets: (same number of planets also discovered as much stars) > earth

The solar system

Nebula: the protostar in which matter, dust, and energy collected and the size of this protostar increase with an increase in temperature and pressure and it bursted 4.6 billion year ago which gave rise to planets, stars, asteroids etc.

Stars

  • Luminous bodies

  • formed of dust and gas and due to this reactons taking place

  • Consists of gases(H, He)

The sun
  • The core

  • Thes radiative zone

  • The convection zone

  • Solar atmosphere

The planets

  • Round bodies,

  • Don't have their own light

  • Have a certain atmosphere

  • Orbiting around a star

  • Have moons

  • Orbit clear

  • 8 planets

  • Mars  smallest planet, gaseous environment, earth's sister,

  • Venus morning star, evening star, hottest planet

  • Earth only life supporting planet, blue planeT, heaviest planet

  • Mercury red planet

  • Jupiter biggest planet

  • Saturn 2nd largest planet, least dense planet

  • Uranus green planet

  • Neptune coldest planet

The first four planets are called terrestrial planets because their atmosphere is made of lighter gases. They are smaller in size, have few moons, near to sun and weak gravitational pull.
The last four planets are called gaseous planets and are larger in size. Their atmosphere is made of heavier gases, have many moons, strong gravitational pull and farther from sun.

Dwarf  planets

  • Round bodies ‘

  • Orbit not clear

  • Low gravitational pull

  • e:g: pluto

Comets

  • Made of dust gas ice

  • Its tail points away from sun

Asteroids

  • small, rocky objects
  • orbit the sun
  • often described as minor planets or planetoids

Meteoroids

  • piece of matter
  • no specific size
  • derived from asteroids, comets
  • hits earth as meteors

Satellites

  • Non planetary bodies

  • Orbiting other planets

  • e:g: moons of different planets

Constellations

  • Clusters of stars

  • Arranged in random shapes or a specific shape

  • Named on animals, birds etc.
