Though not in the role of Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. is making a spectacular comeback to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
The 59-year-old Oscar winner, Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, made the unexpected announcement on Saturday, July 27, at San Diego Comic-Con, that he will play the legendary villain Victor von Doom, better known as Doctor Doom, in the next two Avengers films, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Just like his announcement, Downey made a dramatic entrance at the panel. Laughing, he emerged from behind a group of actors wearing masks and said, "New mask, same task." What have I mentioned to you? I enjoy portraying nuanced roles.
The renowned directors Anthony and Joe Russo will helm Doomsday, Feige, 51, confirmed. Recognized for their contributions to earlier Avengers movies, the Russo brothers stressed the importance of Doctor Doom within the Marvel universe and demanded that "the greatest actor in the world" play the part.
Earlier in the week, Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth, two other MCU stars, made an appearance at Comic-Con to promote their upcoming films, Transformers One and Deadpool & Wolverine, respectively. Fans are excitedly awaiting the next wave of Marvel movies, which will debut in theaters on February 14, 2025, with Captain America: Brave New World. The convention runs through July 28.
Later, Downey Jr. shared a video of the event on Instagram with the caption, "New mask, same task." Downey Jr. revealed himself behind the mask.
